Clear Braces vs. Invisalign®, Which is a Better Fit for You?

Orthodontic care isn’t just for kids – adults can benefit, too!

Although younger patients usually see faster results with orthodontic treatment, adults of any age can also receive the full advantages of orthodontic care. That means straight, beautiful, healthy teeth. Total time for treatment varies based on your condition and the treatment you choose.

Yes, there are three great options for adult orthodontic care!

You already know a thing or two about traditional metal braces, but have you heard about clear braces?

What about Invisalign® clear aligners?

Both of these are terrific orthodontic treatments for adults that can help you reach your goals without the look or the potential inconvenience of braces. Today’s metal braces are much more subtle than before thanks to the unique “small form factor” braces used at Beauchamp Orthodontics – but they’re never your only option.

Let’s take a look at these adult orthodontic treatments:

What Are Clear Braces?

Clear braces offer all the treatment advantages of ordinary braces, but they are made out of a clear plastic material. This material is similar to what’s used in clear aligners, which you can learn more about below. In some cases, patients have told us they don’t even notice their clear braces in the mirror!

Like metal braces, clear braces are attached to the teeth using a system of brackets and wires. The tension on the wires gradually moves the teeth into the healthy “treated position.” Patients will need to visit their board-certified Port Orange orthodontist every few weeks so the tension can be adjusted.

What Are Invisalign® Clear Aligners?

Invisalign® clear aligners are known all around the world as the “clear alternative” to the braces you’re familiar with. They’ve had FDA approval for decades and have grown to become one of the most respected adult orthodontic treatments across the globe. Millions of people have had great success with them.

Unlike metal braces or even clear braces, Invisalign®clear aligners are removable. The clear plastic trays are designed especially for your mouth using advanced digital imagery or, sometimes, an impression made using a special dental putty. Once they’ve been fabricated, you can put them on or take them off at any time.

Deciding Whether Clear Braces or Invisalign® Aligners Are a Better Fit

Most adult patients will qualify for both clear braces and Invisalign® aligners. So, how do you know which one is best? Dr. Beauchamp will be glad to answer your questions and walk you through your options. In the end, the choice is yours! Here are some factors that might help you make your decision:

If You Have Severe Tooth Gaps or Misalignment, Clear Braces Work Best

Braces are designed to ensure you get the results you want even when your condition is very severe. When you schedule your consultation with Dr. Beauchamp, you’ll get a complete orthodontic check-up to let you know if your condition will respond to Invisalign® – if not, you can likely get started with same-day clear braces instead.

If Appearance Is a Top Priority Due to Work or Lifestyle, Use Invisalign®

While appearance is important to most people, some have special reasons that they need to look a certain way. For instance, if you’re a television presenter, you probably want to avoid using braces – even the most discreet clear braces around. For performers and others in a similar situation, Invisalign® can be a confidence booster!

If You Have a Very Busy Schedule, Consider Using Clear Braces

We know that many of our patients have a busy, hectic schedule. That’s why we do everything we can to make the most of your time, starting by respecting it! To care for clear braces, all you need to do is brush your teeth and floss as usual. Plus, they can’t be lost or misplaced. That can make them best when life is a bit rushed!

If You Participate in Sports, Invisalign® Can Be Just Right

No matter if you’re an amateur or professional, Invisalign® can be better for athletes. Though you need to wear Invisalign® aligners for most of every day, you can take them off long enough to participate in medium to high-impact sports. On the other hand, braces can get damaged accidentally, and sometimes they make it harder to use a mouth guard.

If You Love to Cook or are a Foodie, You Might Prefer Invisalign®

Wondering what braces have to do with cooking? Neither braces nor Invisalign® will affect your sense of taste, but some foods are off-limits with braces, so you might prefer Invisalign® if you love creating and/or enjoying culinary masterpieces! With Invisalign® you can remove your trays just to enjoy something sticky or crunchy.
