Kids who get started with orthodontic treatment early usually get the fastest results of any patient.
But even if you’ve had untreated orthodontic issues for decades, it’s never too late to get the smile you deserve. Adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment just as much as kids. It may take a little longer, but it will all be worth it when you can see the results in the mirror.
At Beauchamp Orthodontics, we make adult orthodontic care easy. Our goal is to provide you with all the options and help you make an informed decision based on your situation. As a family-friendly orthodontist in Port Orange, we deliver the highest quality of service to all of our patients.
When you visit us, Dr. Beauchamp will be glad to walk you through all the possibilities. But it never hurts to get an early start by doing some research. Let’s take a close look at popular adult orthodontic options:
1. Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most common orthodontic treatment and are effective for adults, teens, and kids. You won’t be alone if you opt for this reliable and convenient approach: About four million Americans wear braces, and 25% of them are adults!
We recommend metal braces for the most serious tooth gaps and misalignments. Metal braces may also be more budget-friendly than clear aligners. With braces, you can rest assured millions of adult patients have seen amazing results. All you have to do is keep them clean and schedule an occasional follow-up.
During your follow-up appointments, your braces will be adjusted so they’re always exerting just the right amount of pressure to gently move teeth into the treated position. It takes about a week to get used to wearing braces. It should never be painful, and most people experience no side effects at all.
Depending on your unique needs, you may need braces for anywhere from a few months to around two years. Most patients opt to wear a retainer after braces, ensuring they maintain results in years to come.
In the event your braces are damaged, they can usually be fixed at home. If the damage is severe or you are in pain, contact Beauchamp Orthodontics right away for an appointment to get it all taken care of.
2. Clear Braces
Clear braces are similar to conventional metal braces, but they are made from a clear material. They are virtually invisible, combining the treatment power of traditional braces with the superior aesthetics of clear plastic aligners. They are sought after by television presenters and other media figures.
Taking care of clear braces is just the same as metal braces, and your follow-up schedule won’t be any different: You’ll usually have more frequent appointments in the first few months, tapering off as the treatment continues. Like metal braces, clear braces can usually be repaired after incidental damage.
3. Clear Plastic Aligners
Clear plastic aligners come in two forms – Invisalign® and Spark™.
Invisalign® has been around since 1997. With millions of successes all over the world, it is known as the clear alternative to braces. The aligners are made using detailed digital images of your mouth, so they will fit you perfectly. They should be worn more than 20 hours a day but can be removed at any time.
Convenient removal, whenever you wish, makes it a snap to clean your aligners and avoid any accidents while playing sports. These aligners never need to be adjusted or replaced, you’ll simply get another set periodically that’s designed to continue the process, and you still get occasional follow-up appointments to verify that you’re on track with your treatment.
Spark™ aligners use a similar concept to Invisalign® – they are clear, removable aligners made from a specialized plastic. Spark™ uses highly advanced technology in its materials, which it claims makes the aligners even less noticeable while reducing staining from coffee and tea.
Both Spark™ and Invisalign® can be appropriate for adults undergoing orthodontic treatment for the majority of mild or moderate conditions. After an adjustment period of a few days, patients should experience no discomfort or other side effects. In very rare cases, allergic reactions are possible.
One note to keep in mind is that clear aligner users should always be careful while handling them – if they break, a new pair will need to be fabricated.
